My presentation will explain the history of Genimap and the development of location from the point of view of content, devices and money.
Established in 1919, our mapping company has grown to specialise in Internet and mobile solutions. Consisting of three parts, map publishing, location-based tailor made projects and Internet and mobile solutions, Genimap is the leading mapping company in Finland. Employing 110 experts, we have been a profitable company for many years.
Direction and location started in the printed media before moving onto stand-alone products such as CD-ROMS and PDA products offering no interaction with server sites. Unfortunately, these media do not necessarily support each other. Despite the fact that printed maps, CD-ROM maps, online maps and mobile maps belong to the same company, they do not offer much cross-referencing.
Traditionally, Yellow Pages, White Pages, Pink Pages or Blue Pages have offered a medium to sell advertising. However, mobile applications can provide more value. Within a site such as a shopping centre, basic information loses out to enriched information. Thanks to enriched information, one can present an attractive 3D image of the building and shops. However, significant memory is required. Regarding navigation products, different users prefer different types of products. In the future, I would like to see printed content and digital content providing more mutual support. Although users probably enjoy access to both, they are considered as quite separate.
