Case: CityNeo-Mobile City Guides

The Ericcson Smartphone possesses between 100 and 1 000 times the processing power of the Apollo moon missions.  I intend to demonstrate various uses for this power.  Within four or five years, we believe that these phones will account for 60% of the market.  Since operators subsidise their phones, this model sells for between EUR 1 and EUR 49.  As a result, we predict a significant market penetration and a change in applications going forward.

I.             Recent Developments in Mobile Technology

Traditionally, online maps do not offer much more than standard maps: as static entities, they have hardly changed.  In contrast, the future of maps will rely on three-dimensional effects based on mobile processing power.  Gate 5 spent a long time planning our participation in the market and we currently work with Nokia and Sony-Ericcson.  Usually, we add our applications to the phone units before shipment.  To put sales in context, Nokia sells over 200 000 mobile phone units per day.  In the future marketplace, since operators are only interested in global partnerships, we are building a network of global content partners.  In our view, consolidation remains the key to success.

In relation to operators, media companies have been relegated to the role of content supplier.  Consequently, operators dictate their behaviour and leading media firms will become service providers.  By the end of Q3, the largest American mobile carrier, Sprint, will install high-precision GPS chip sets in 90% of its phones.  In this regard, Americans are clearly in advance of Europeans.  Following September 11, police need to be able to locate individuals calling the emergency services.
