He was one of the three founders (in 1974) of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD, latter renamed Social Democratic Party (PSD).  In 1980 he was Minister of State.  From 1981-83, Mr. Balsemão was Prime Minister of Portugal and President of PSD.  He has been elected a member of the Portuguese Parliament several terms. He is a member of the National Council  of PSD.  In May 2005 he was elected member of the State Council.He is Chairman of Allianz Portugal  and Nec Portugal, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Banco Privado Português, member of the General Council of Associação Empresarial Portuguesa.
