Twitter is going “Places” live

Sector news

Twitter finally went live and global with “Twitter Places”, which was first announced in April. Users can go to Twitter's site or use the app on a mobile phone to tag a location along with a tweet. One can either pick from an existing location, or enter a new one. Then anyone who reads that tweet can click on that location to see recent tweets also linked to that location. Twitter is pegging the release to the World Cup: see who else is at the stadium, or, more realistically, at a particular sports bar or venue.

How social is social?

Sector news

In an opinion piece, Charles M. Blow of the New York Times cites a report by the Pew Research Center, which found that only 43 percent of Americans know all or most of their neighbours by name. Twenty-nine percent know only some, and 28 percent know none. Yet it is not unusual to have thousands of “friends” and “followers” on the social-networking sites in which they vigorously participate. Mr. Blow thinks that social networks are rewiring our relationships and that our keyboard communities are affecting the attachments in our actual ones.

Wie sozial ist “social”?

Branchen Nachrichten

(Quelle: New York Times)

Google in danger of criminal prosecution

Sector news

Google’s problems with collecting illegal data while taking pictures for its “street view” service are not going away. European and especially German data protection authorities had asked Google to hand over the hard disks containing this information and on June 2, we reported that Google had missed the deadline for this. That data still has not been handed over and now Privacy International (PI) said that Google is "almost certain" to face prosecution for collecting such data from unsecured wi-fi networks.

Googl riskiert Strafverfolgung

Juni, was Google nicht tat.
